Business Literacy for Artists

Arts Council Wood Buffalo (ACWB) is listening to our members and artists in the community on what struggles they have and areas where they want leaning opportunities. ACWB is excited to offer our 2017 Business of the Arts workshop series, focusing on helping artists and arts organizations in various stages of their development reach their next step! Artists are unique and ACWB is working with specialists in the creative industry to share relevant and impactful information in these workshops.

The first of our four 2017 BOA workshops is on March 25, and focuses on Business Literacy for Artists. This all day workshop is full of insightful information to help artists and arts organizations understand some of the basic financial and legal topics they deal with in their everyday business practice. Speakers and topics include:

Legal Literacy for Artists: Intellectual Property Law & Contractual Terms for Artists
Martin Kratz, Q.C. leads the Intellectual Property Practice Group and the e-Commerce practice for Bennett Jones LLP. Martin’s practice focuses primarily on the protection and commercialization of intellectual property. Martin is the co-director of Osgoode Hall Law School's Intellectual Property LLM program and teaches courses in that program as well as Osgoode Hall's E-Business LLM program. Martin is a Governor of the Alberta College of Art + Design and gives guest lectures on intellectual property issues for artists.

Accounting Literacy for Artists: Accounting Basics for Artists
Cherlyne Knox is a seasoned tax preparation professional, specializing in artists and self-employed individuals at Artbooks, a Toronto based income tax agency. She currently works in financial management for film and television. With a deep understanding of both left and right brain faculties, one of the greatest joys she takes from her work is helping those that are number-challenged feel more secure and on top of their finances.

Organizational Types for Arts-Based Business: For Profit and Non Profit Structures
Staci Millard is a Chartered Professional Accountant who operates an office locally in Fort McMurray. She has been working in public practice helping businesses and non-profit organizations for over ten years. Staci is currently assisting with the Ask an Expert Program through the RMWB Economic Development Department to help existing businesses get back on their feet and help new businesses ensure they are set up properly.

ACWB is inviting artists, arts based businesses and community arts organizations on March 25 from 9:30am – 4pm to the Redpoll Centre Boardroom in Shell Place as we dive into the world of business for artists!
