The Voice of Business In Action

Advocating for Business: Fort McMurray Chamber at the 2025 ACC AGM & Policy Plenary

Together with our board, the Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce has played a key role in shaping policies that support a thriving business community. Some of these policies we have written, while others we are proud to co-sponsor?each reflecting our commitment to fostering economic growth and ensuring businesses have the conditions they need to succeed.

As the collective voice of business in Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo, we advocate, support, and collaborate to create an environment where businesses can flourish. While we actively champion your interests at every opportunity, we are also part of a structured provincial and federal network that amplifies our advocacy efforts, ensuring our region’s needs are heard at every level of government.

As part of this mission, we will be debating these policies at the 2025 Alberta Chambers of Commerce AGM & Policy Plenary Session in Medicine Hat from May 29-31, 2025.

Below are a few of the key policy issues we will be addressing.

Fort McMurray Chamber Advocates for the Future of Canadian Energy

The Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring Ensuring the Future of Canadian Energy at the 2025 Alberta Chambers of Commerce AGM & Policy Plenary Session. As a province rich in energy resources, Alberta must take the lead in securing the long-term viability of the energy sector while balancing economic growth and sustainability.

Canada’s energy industry faces regulatory uncertainty, market access challenges, and investment risks, threatening its role as a global leader in responsible energy production. This policy calls on the Government of Alberta to strengthen the sector by improving regulatory efficiency, enhancing investment incentives, and supporting innovation in emerging energy technologies.

Key recommendations include:
✅ Streamlining Regulatory Approvals ? Reducing delays that hinder investment and project development.
✅ Expanding Market Access ? Advocating for critical infrastructure to reach global energy markets.
✅ Encouraging Investment & Innovation ? Supporting emerging technologies, including carbon capture and renewable advancements.

A strong energy sector means jobs, economic stability, and global competitiveness for Alberta and Canada. The Fort McMurray Chamber remains committed to advocating for policies that ensure a prosperous future for Canadian energy.

Fort McMurray Chamber Advocates for Highway 686 & Northern Corridor Development

The Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce is championing the Highway 686 Corridor & Highway 63 Northern Corridor policy at the 2025 Alberta Chambers of Commerce AGM & Policy Plenary Session. Improving northern transportation infrastructure is critical to unlocking economic growth, enhancing industry competitiveness, and connecting remote communities.

The development of Highway 686 would create a vital east-west connection, linking Fort McMurray to Peace River and beyond, while enhancements to Highway 63 would improve safety, efficiency, and access for key industries such as energy, forestry, and tourism. Strengthening Alberta’s Northern Corridor would also support Indigenous partnerships, resource development, and investment opportunities across the region.

Key recommendations include:
✅ Investing in Highway 686 ? Establishing a strategic east-west transportation link.
✅ Enhancing Highway 63 ? Improving safety, access, and reliability for industry and commuters.
✅ Supporting Economic Growth ? Facilitating trade, resource development, and Indigenous partnerships.

Expanding Alberta’s transportation network is essential to strengthening our economy, creating jobs, and ensuring long-term regional prosperity. The Fort McMurray Chamber is committed to advocating for this critical infrastructure development.

Canada Responds with Retaliatory Measures

Retaliatory Tariffs: Canada has announced 25% tariffs on $155 billion worth of U.S. goods, effective immediately, in response to the U.S. measures.

Alberta Pushes Back on U.S. Tariffs

In response to new U.S. tariffs, Alberta is introducing measures to protect local industries and strengthen trade. The province will prioritize Alberta and Canadian businesses in government procurement, while Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) will stop purchasing U.S. alcohol and video lottery terminals. A "Buy Alberta" campaign will promote local agricultural products, and the government is pushing to remove barriers to interprovincial trade. Alberta is also exploring new pipeline infrastructure to expand energy exports. Premier Danielle Smith emphasized the province’s commitment to defending its economy while supporting free and fair trade.

This aligns with the Fort McMurray Chamber and the ACC's ongoing advocacy for eliminating interprovincial trade barriers to improve business competitiveness and economic resilience, ensuring Alberta businesses have better access to domestic markets.
