Advocating for Business: Fort McMurray Chamber at the 2025 ACC AGM & Policy Plenary
|
Together with our board, the Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce has played a key role in shaping policies that support a thriving business community. Some of these policies we have written, while others we are proud to co-sponsor?each reflecting our commitment to fostering economic growth and ensuring businesses have the conditions they need to succeed.
As the collective voice of business in Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo, we advocate, support, and collaborate to create an environment where businesses can flourish. While we actively champion your interests at every opportunity, we are also part of a structured provincial and federal network that amplifies our advocacy efforts, ensuring our region’s needs are heard at every level of government.
As part of this mission, we will be debating these policies at the 2025 Alberta Chambers of Commerce AGM & Policy Plenary Session in Medicine Hat from May 29-31, 2025.
Below are a few of the key policy issues we will be addressing.

Establishment of a Pre-Approved Trade Corridor for Economic Growth and Investment
|
The Fort McMurray Chamber is proud to sponsor the Pre-Approved Trade Corridor for Economic Growth and Investment policy at the 2025 Alberta Chamber of Commerce AGM.
With 89% of Alberta’s exports going to the U.S., our economy is vulnerable to trade disruptions.
This policy urges the Government of Alberta to diversify exports by streamlining approvals and investing in infrastructure to connect Alberta to global markets.
Key recommendations include:
✅ Building a Multi-Modal Trade Corridor ? Expanding pipelines, railways, and highways. ✅ Increasing Trade Infrastructure Investment ? Leveraging federal and private funding. ✅ Regulatory Streamlining ? Eliminating interprovincial barriers. ✅ Strengthening Global Trade ? Reducing dependence on a single market.
This initiative will create jobs, attract investment, and boost GDP. We’re committed to advocating for Alberta’s economic future.
|
Alberta’s Role in Enhancing Interprovincial Collaboration
|
The Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce is co-sponsoring Alberta’s Role in Enhancing Interprovincial Collaboration at the 2025 Alberta Chamber of Commerce AGM to push for a more seamless national economy by reducing trade barriers and improving labour mobility.
Despite agreements like the Canadian Free Trade Agreement (CFTA), businesses still face regulatory inconsistencies, supply chain inefficiencies, and costly credential recognition delays, making it easier to operate in the U.S. than in Canada. Removing these barriers could boost Canada’s economy by $200 billion annually.
Key recommendations include: ✅ Aligning Standards & Regulations ? Reducing inefficiencies in transportation, agriculture, and construction. ✅ Streamlining Credential Recognition ? Creating a unified system to improve workforce mobility and address labour shortages.
By taking the lead, Alberta can strengthen economic integration, support businesses, and improve job opportunities across Canada.
|
At the Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce, advocacy is at the heart of our mission. As the unified voice of business, we tirelessly represent your interests on the issues that impact our vibrant business community.
Whether you need support, have concerns, or wish to contribute to our advocacy efforts, we invite you to reach out through our advocacy page submission.
Alternatively, you can connect directly with our dedicated Executive Director, Dianna De Sousa, at ed@fortmcmurraychamber.ca.
Our Business Advocacy Committee plays a crucial role in engaging with all levels of government to influence policies, regulations, and decisions that foster a favorable business environment for success and growth in the Wood Buffalo region.
Your insights are invaluable, and we encourage you to share any issues or barriers affecting businesses in our region, be they municipal, provincial, or federal. Together, we can shape a thriving business landscape.
